Took advantage of the warm weather to do the rear brakes on the Soul.

Friction material fell right off one pad.

Dat scoring tho!

80k on stock rears.

All better. Well not really. I got the pads seated and quiet in a straight but if I turned right it would make a horrible grinding noise.

The inside ring of the dust guard sits inside a little slot on the back of the rotor. The dust guard has started rusting and as such is swollen. It rubbed a shiny ring on the back of the old rotors. Some grinding and a little paint and all is well. Had the rear drivers side off 3 times to figure it out.

Maybe you just have a noise gremlin?

I thought it was just noise from the belt on the PS pump. Nope. Something brakey.

When does the noise happen?

Sometimes around a bend, sometimes under braking, only while in motion. The around the bend part is not as loud as I thought it was, because that part *is* getting masked by some P/S noise, but there is a little. It shouldn’t be hub bearings because they’ve been done, but I’ll check into that. In theory, there’s a brake wear warning light, but I don’t know it it works anymore.

Take them apart and look for shiny spots.

well you had better luck than I

Tried to do my in-laws mountaineer’s brakes and man were they f-ed.

Couldn’t remove the caliper bracket, and couldn’t even move one of the 2 slides. Not in or out. Wouldn’t budge. penetrating oil, punches, hammers, pliers to pull, nothing. They’re going to have to take it to the shop.

Good news is, my battery impact gun did a great job with bolts that were movable (first usage)

Oh yeah came apart slicker than shit. It would have been less than a hour all said and done had the dust shield not made a scraping noise.

Haha

Their Mountaineer has sat for over a year without anyone even starting it. They had to put WD40 in the lock to get the thing unlocked/get the key to turn.

It should have been my first warning that the brakes were going to be a MESS. I even told them when I failed....IT SHOULD ONLY BE LUGNUTS AND THEN 4 BOLTS, THAT’S IT.

Yeah man I think they’re going to need that and a whole new caliper bracket and new slides because I don’t think that slide’s coming out and it’s probably cheaper than drilling out the old slide.
